2017 Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Access (I.D.E.A.) Committee Recommendations
In the Spring of 2017, the AFP International Board of Directors tasked the Diversity and Inclusion Committee with examining the resources and supports available to AFP members and making recommendations to bring them in line with current best practices. Through dialogue with committee members, the Chair directed that workgroups be struck to address their top three priorities: redefining Diversity and Inclusion, surveying chapter needs, and identifying methods of providing organizational support.  The recommendations presented here have been prepared by the workgroups and propose an opportunity to create a framework that connect all three areas of need together in support of the Board’s strategic goals.

Lean In Partnership
AFP is one of 90 nonprofits that are official partners of Lean In, a nonprofit organization committed to closing the gender gap.  Lean In provides access to programs and resources that help men and women develop critical skills to counteract gender bias. 

2015 Diversity and Inclusion Report
AFP partnered with several other organizations (including CFRE International, African American Development Officers Network, Canadian Association of Gift Planners (CAGP), Native Americans in Philanthropy, and the Grant Professionals Association) to launch a survey to establish a baseline of information on diversity in the fundraising profession. The AFP Diversity and Inclusion Research Task Force created this report to summarize the survey findings.

AFP Diversity and Inclusion Summit Report 
In October 2013 AFP, the D5 Coalition and the Joint Affinity Group (JAG) co-convened a Diversity and Inclusion Summit in Pittsburgh, PA. The attached report are suggested considerations and action steps for the fundraising profession to take over the next five year period. There were six areas of focus which included:

2. Staffing/operations/administration
3. Governance
4. Education/Professional Development
5. Terminology/Definitions
6. Marketing/Communications

AFP Diverse Communities Scholarship Program Overview & CriteriaThe mission of the AFP Diverse Communities Conference Scholarship Fund is to help ensure that AFP programs are inclusive and supportive of diversity-related issues and concerns, to provide financial support for activities that increase understanding and awareness of diversity issues within AFP, and to provide financial assistance for professional development for AFP members who self-identify as coming from a diverse community and/or who are employed by grassroots organizations that primarily serve diverse populations.

Fellowship in Diversity and Inclusion

The AFP Foundation for Philanthropy – Canada has just completed a two-year Fellowship in Diversity and Inclusion program in Ontario.  With funding from the Ministry of Citizenship, Immigration and International Trade, two cohorts of Fellows have completed a program of membership, education, mentoring and policy development.  A total of 61 Fellows completed the program.

The Foundation is currently seeking funding to expand the program across the country.

Inclusive Giving Workshops

Twelve workshops on philanthropy focusing on different communities took place in Ontario during 2012-2015.  The resources developed from these workshops can be found at Afpinclusivegiving.ca

Friends of Diversity Designation AFP’s Strategic Plan is the blueprint for organizational growth and success in the future. For the strategic plan to be effective, it must be implemented through a partnership between the International Headquarters and the local chapters. As each chapter contributes its part to the overall Strategic Plan, AFP will meet its goals and continue to advance philanthropy and the fundraising profession around the world. The Friends of Diversity Designation recognizes those chapters who have accomplished many of the key objectives outlined in the Advancing Diversity goal.

Charles Stephens Excellence in Diversity Award
The Charles R. Stephens Excellence in Diversity Award is named for the 1992-1993 AFP Chair Charles R. Stephens, CFRE, and recognizes his efforts in bringing AFP’s diversity programs to the forefront. This award honors the year’s most outstanding demonstration by AFP chapters of leadership, creativity and initiative in building diversity in membership or programming.
