Member Profiles

Every month we introduce a member of our AFP Chapter to our professional community. Each member answers a few questions to tell us about their time in fundraising, why they love their work, and why they are involved with AFP.

This month, meet Roxanne McHattie, AFP Saskatoon Chapter Programming Chair, and Director, Principal & Major Fundraising Initiatives, University of Saskatchewan

How long have you been in fundraising & how did you discover the fundraising world?

Like most fundraisers, I found the profession by accident! I’ve been a fundraiser for 11 years now. My career began at United Way of Saskatoon and Area, where I was hired as a Campaign Manager. I had actually applied for a different role, but they asked if I’d consider the campaign manager position instead. At the time, I was living in Calgary and eager to move back to Saskatoon, so I accepted the opportunity—and I haven’t looked back!

What is something you love about being a fundraiser?

I love being the bridge between generous people and the causes that need support. There are so many individuals who want to create positive change through philanthropy, and we get to help them put those intentions into action. It’s truly a privilege to have a front‑row seat to the impact generosity can make.

Why are you involved with AFP?

I’m passionate about the fundraising profession—it’s important, and it deserves to be recognized as a legitimate career path. In the future, I hope fewer people “stumble” into fundraising and more intentionally pursue it. I believe having a strong community of fundraising professionals matters; it allows us to learn from one another and grow together. If I can contribute to building skills and connections within that community, I’m happy to play a part.

What causes are special to you?

I’m proud to have served on the board of Saskatoon Interval House for several years. They are a wonderful organization that provides shelter and support for women and children leaving domestic violence situations, while also advocating for violence‑prevention strategies. Their work is incredibly important, and the cause is close to my heart.
