October 1, 2021 - Shifting Behaviors Through Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Access: A collaboration with AFP Chicago

We are living in a moment of time where acts of performative allyship are at an all-time high. How do we shut out the noise and focus on the work at hand? How do we come together and begin to dismantle systems that don’t serve us? There are many approaches we can take, but we must start at the beginning and take steps together.

Join us for a first-ever joint collaboration with our colleagues from AFP-Chicago.

On March 8, 2018, AFP celebrated International Women’s Day by launching its new Women’s Impact Initiative or WII. The Initiative is AFP’s response to a series of issues around the role of women in fundraising, including gender inequity, sexual harassment, and implicit bias. Despite women representing approximately 70% of the fundraising profession, we estimate that barely a third are in leadership position. We see salaries for women that are consistently $15,000 - $20,000 behind those of our male colleagues. And there are so many stories about harassment—sexual or otherwise—from bosses, colleagues, board members and donors that go back many years. The goal of the Initiative is to provide skills and training so that fair and equitable salaries can be negotiated; to provide resources to create workplaces that are against harassment in all its forms; and develop mentoring programs, as well as research and other services, that can break barriers and create new opportunities for women.

Strong nonprofit leadership is key to the long-term success of the organization. But leaders do have an “expiration date”. Nonprofits benefit by taking a deliberate and proactive approach that includes planning for smooth and thoughtful transitions of leadership. Less than 1/3 of nonprofits have a written succession plan. When a transition occurs due to an unexpected vacancy on the staff or board, or the anticipated transition of a long-term leader, being prepared can help a nonprofit weather the inevitable challenges of leadership transition. Leaders in the nonprofit community with deep experience in executive search, staff and leadership coaching, board and staff recruitment and retention will join our panel to discuss the questions than need to be asked. Panelists will explore questions that include: Who should be involved in succession planning? How transparent should leadership be around succession plans? How do you prepare an organization to remain resilient during an unexpected departure? What do your funders want to know about your plans? Is succession planning important to them or does it signal change that might scare them away? How do you help new leadership get settled? How do you retain your institutional knowledge and bring in the next generation of leadership on your board? Confirmed panelist include: Dan Nevez, Senior Consultant, Executive Search at Campbell & Company Norbert Tan, Principal, SB Lemons & Company – Thought Partner and Executive Coach Cassie Carter – Vice President, Campbell & Company - Moderator

Dealing with Personal and Organizational Changes Caused by the Pandemic Join a roundtable discussion that explores how the pandemic has impacted fundraisers and nonprofits. Many of us have lost loved ones and are grieving or have been seriously ill or are working remotely while juggling children and/or elderly parents or have lost our jobs or all of the above. How are nonprofits dealing with the emotional fallout? Are staff getting more support? And how are nonprofits handling changing COVID protocols? Can and should employers mandate vaccines when offices reopen? Will remote work remain an option once we’re back to normal? And can we maintain our organizational cultures when people that no one’s met outside of Zoom are hired? Small break out groups will allow us to discuss these questions in depth with our peers. Discussion lead by Jody Short, CRNA with Guest Speaker Dan Nevez, Senior Consultant, Campbell & Company

With the changing landscape in our society as we create a more inclusive space, oftentimes there is a struggle with consciously or unconsciously using language or words that are marginalizing or disparaging in nature. Throughout our careers, we have experienced discomfort or vulnerability when we say the wrong thing to a donor, colleague or community partner. These moments spur deep reflection at some point in our career/lives. If there is anything that we’ve learned in nonprofit work as fundraisers, it’s that the right words matter. They help build better relationships and create bridges. They shape how we view the world and how the world views us. So how can words help us to define new ways to engage with one another? Join AFP-GLAC’s IDEA (Inclusion. Diversity. Equity. Access.) Committee and Marla A. Parker, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Public Administration, Department of Political Science and Co-Founder, Civic and Social Innovation Group at California State University-Los Angeles as she helps us to unpack why words matter more than ever. She’ll lead us on an interactive exploration of the types of language and terminology that encourages a culture of constant learning and growth, which is critical in navigating a landscape where language changes. You’ll be given a blueprint of practical strategies, tools and resources that can ultimately be used as the building blocks towards a more equitable sector and world.

April 13, 2021 - Your virtual event must be more than just another Zoom call!

Presented by Kim Ferreira, Cancer Support community Pasadena

The world of fundraising events has been forever changed by this pandemic. What hasn't changed are donor expectations. As we pivot and plan, donors still expect an event that will that is full of meaning, an event that’s highly personalized. Nothing less will do for our donors. Vaccination rates are increasing and herd immunity may be on the horizon, but virtual events aren’t fading away. This talk will help you adapt to this new world as we wait for our guests to feel comfortable heading to the hotel ballroom once again. We will discuss the tricks that can make a virtual event even more successful than the traditional in-person format. How we can tug at our donors’ heartstrings through the screen, so they will open their wallets and continue to fund your mission from the comfort of their living rooms.

April 6, 2021 - Exploring the relationship between the Director of Development and CEO

Presented by Charlene Dimas-Peinado and Andrea Salazar, Wellnest, Juliann Rooke and Somer Sherwood-White, Descanso Gardens, Bruce Rankin & Genevieve Riutort, Westside Food Bank, & Cassie Carter, Ph.D., Campbell and Company

Successful fundraising is centered on building authentic relationships. In a nonprofit organization, that begins internally and probably no single relationship is more important than the one between the executive director role and director of development role. One carries the responsibility of leading the organization to the efficient execution of its mission, and the other shoulders the burden of finding the money that makes it all possible. In many ways, these two individuals are joined at the hip. Why then do they seem at times to be pulling painfully in opposite directions? Far too often, development directors feel that their organization’s executive director erects barriers that prevent them from raising money. On the other hand, executive directors may be uncomfortable with their development directors because of their focus on raising funds. Today we are going to hear from three organizations who have managed to find the secret sauce of teamwork and collaboration between these two critical roles.

The lack of diversity across all sectors, from entertainment to tech, continues to be a challenge for racial, ethnic and/or gender minorities. The nonprofit sector is not exempt. While the nonprofit sector primarily serves communities of color, its leadership is overwhelmingly white with only 20% of leadership positions filled by minorities. As fundraisers, this presents an additional challenge when interacting with a donor pool that has traditionally been white and male. Micro-aggressions, implicit biases, and lack of cultural awareness are just a few of the hurdles minorities face when pursuing fundraiser positions at nonprofits. How does one navigate this space and gain success when identifying with a minority group? Join us in a thought provoking, vulnerable, and timely discussion to explore how to navigate the nonprofit sector as a racial, ethnic and/or gender minority.
