Is your nonprofit ready to accept or deny charitable contributions from potentially controversial partners? Do you accept gifts from local wineries or cannabis-related businesses? When does it make sense to turn down a gift? What are the issues you should consider? It may be time to have a board discussion around gift acceptance and to update your policy.

Lisa Gibert is the chief executive officer of Clark College Foundation, the fundraising partner of Clark College. Under Gibert's leadership for the last 13 years, Clark College Foundation's total assets have increased by $23 million.  In 2018, Gibert was selected as the one of the top fundraising leaders in the country by the Council for Advancement as Support of Education (CASE and received the CASE Commonfund Institutionally Related Foundation Award, one of the fundraising industry's most prestigious national honors. Gibert earned her bachelor of science degree in business and finance from the University of Oregon and a master's in business administration at the University of California at Irvine. She is a Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE).

Linda Reid, Relationship Banking Officer in Vancouver, Washington, is responsible for client relationship management and retention and is dedicated to creating new ways to enhance those relationships.  Linda has nearly 40 years in banking, including 20 years of experience in commercial real estate. Her expertise resides in nonprofit and small business banking. She is actively involved in her local community, serving as a board member with Vancouver's Downtown Association; Leadership Clark County; the Clark County Mural Society; The Nonprofit Network of SW Washington, Ducks Unlimited, The Magenta Theater, and Washington State University Business MAP Growth Program. She is also an active committee member for the Parks Foundation of Clark County and a volunteer with Junior Achievement.

Ben Pirie is an attorney at Lane Powell. He counsels cannabis businesses on a wide range of corporate and regulatory needs, and is passionate about buildinglong-lasting relationships with clients as they reach toward their goals in one of the most dynamic and fraught industries in the world. Ben brings his experience as in-house counsel to a Fortune 1000 company in Portland to bear on Oregon’s emerging cannabis industry, where he advises clients on contracts, entity formation and governance, intellectual property, mergers and acquisitions, and compliance. He has helped clients from labs to retailers — on their terms and timelines — to obtain and keep every type of recreational-marijuana license from the Oregon Liquor Control Commission. Ben is experienced in structuring complex transactions that provide cannabis industry brands access to interstate markets without violating state laws. In addition to advising clients, Ben is active in engaging with state and local governments in order to ensure common sense, business-friendly regulation of the marijuana industry.
