Elements of Fundraising

This workshop, presented in a roundtable fashion, will provide information on specific fundraising elements including: Annual Giving, Special Events, First Time Donors, Social Media, and Stewardship. The presenters are all fundraisers in Washtenaw County.

Annual Giving (Allie Schachter, Ozone House, Development Director). What drives a strong annual giving program? What role do donor acquisition, stewardship, communications, and special events play? How is “success” defined? What does it mean to have a strong annual giving program and how can your organization leverage its existing strengths (and opportunities for growth) to raise more dollars in support of your mission.

Special Events (Heather Steenrod, A2 Summer Festival, Development Director). Whether you're deciding to host an event or you're collecting RSVPs for that event on your calendar, there a few key steps to take in order to get the most out of your event. Topics covered include: setting goals, budgeting, gaining consensus with your staff, tips for cultivation and stewardship, and pitfalls to avoid.

First Time Donors (Chelsea Brown, SOS Community Services, Development Director).You’ve acquired a new donor! So, what is the next step? How do you get a first-time donor to stick around? Learn the techniques you can use to increase donor retention and gain life-long donors for your organization.

Fundraising on Social Media (Kari Landry, A2 Summer Festival, Marketing Manager) We now spend more time on social media than in our email inboxes. Inside Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, there are powerful tools to help you not only grow your following, but easily convert them into digital donors. We'll cover fundraising tips and tools for each platform, including how to mirror your existing fundraisers and events in this social setting and create effective content that connects, compels, and converts fans into donors.

Stewardship (Patricia Berry, Heurista Institute, Co-founder and Executive Director) (U-M Libraries) Fundraising shops with high donor retention and a vibrant donor pipeline rely on a strong relationship between donor relations and every other aspect of the organization. We will discuss the key elements of designing a donor relations program including: reporting, recognition, and events that serve your donors and also create opportunities for major gift officers to deepen their relationships with prospective donors.
