Hanna Kath and Linelle Takeuchi honored by the Hawaiian Humane Society
The Hawaiian Humane Society honors Hanna Kath and Linelle Takeuchi. Both volunteer more than 500 hours every year and even foster animals to get them ready for adoption. Hanna has been a volunteer for 10 years and Linelle for 14 years. These are two of our over 600 volunteers who give more than 91,689 hours each year to help with feeding, cleaning cages, walking our dogs, and giving tons of unconditional love and attention to our animals.
Dorothy "Dot" Mason honored by PBS Hawaii
Dorothy “Dot” Mason of Honolulu has been a key supporter of new initiatives at PBS Hawaii. She was there, with conviction and confidence, at the “birth” of the innovative learning initiative HIKI NŌ…and has cheered for the students ever since. She directed funding from her late husband George Mason for the first--and following--live televised town halls called KĀKOU. She was also there to create a volunteer hub in a new PBS Hawaii facility. Dot Mason is a highly respected, beloved person at PBS Hawai`i for her humble good cheer, good questions and good judgement—all to support the well-being of Hawaii.
Sacred Hearts Sisters honored by Sacred Hearts Academy
On September 12, Sacred Hearts Academy celebrated the 110th birthday of the school. They celebrated the Sisters of the Sacred Hearts Congregation and the 110-year presence and guidance of the Sisters at the Academy they experience every day. In 1909, there were about 11 Sisters who started the Academy. In 2019, they celebrate and recognize 6 representatives of Sacred Hearts Sisters as the Academy’s VIP’s.
Kevin H. M. Chong Kee honored by Saint Louis School
Kevin is an inspirational example of dedication to the Saint Louis brotherhood and to our community. An electrical contractor and owner of Kevin’s Electric, Inc. since 1985, he is a valued supporter of his alma mater. He serves as the President of the Alumni Association, a member of the Saint Louis School Board of Trustees, and is a vice-chair of St. Louis School’s multi-million-dollar comprehensive campaign. He leads the fundraising efforts for his Class of 1971’s 50th anniversary class gift, raising over $340,000 to date, to construct the Class of 1971 Brotherhood Plaza next to the new Clarence T. C. Ching Athletic Complex.

Dwight and Trese Otani honored by Sacred Hearts Academy and St. Louis School
Trese Kano Otani, SHA ‘75 and Dwight Otani, SLS ’75 are founders of Sacred Hearts’ Academy Uncorked (2017) and St. Louis’ Grape Escape (2008). These annual functions are highly successful fundraising events, benefitting the schools’ financial aid programs. Both schools are grateful to Trese and Dwight Otani for spearheading such fun and creative fundraising events that bring alums and community support to each school’s campuses.

Debbie Berger has been a remarkable leader on behalf of Hawai‘i Community Foundation in our most visible and important time. She has led the board with great respect and thoughtfulness for her fellow board members and with an unparalleled commitment to HCF and the people and communities we serve.
Dean and Tara Spagnoli honored by Le Jardin Academy
As part of the Le Jardin community for over a decade, Dean and Tara Spagnoli enrolled their eldest, Aiden ’20 in Pre-K. His sister, Siena ’22 soon followed. Tara started her volunteer work as the PFA Junior School Representative. Fast forward to the maturation of philanthropy at LJA and Tara and Dean chaired LJA's inaugural Annual Fund Parent Committee in 2015. Dean is the current Chairman of the Trustees.
Bruce Voss honored by PBS Hawaii
Honolulu attorney Bruce Voss, a partner in the law firm Bays Lung Rose & Holma, is being honored as PBS Hawai‘i’s VIP for his sage pro bono counsel in support of the HIKI NŌ learning initiative. Bruce is charting a legal pathway for this first-of-its-kind educational program. Through his strategic contributions, thousands of Hawai‘i students are gaining important life lessons and 21st-century workforce skills.
Jean Hamakawa honored by Assets School
Jean Hamakawa has served on the Assets School Board of Trustees for 12 years, and as chair of the Development Committee, she is a tireless champion of Assets’ mission. Jean continues to serve and support the school because "Assets allows bright children an environment where they can embrace their differences and learn how to shine. If Assets did not exist, there would be a huge void in this community.”
Fred Badua honored by Servco Pacific Inc.
We honor the late Fred Badua, who dedicated his life to service and was a valued leader in the community; his passion for giving back and infectious personality spread positivity everywhere he went. Fred was a true representation of what it means to be selfless. His legacy will live on through us by the service we do. Fred will always be remembered as “Mr. Aloha” and he will be missed.

Sue Ferandin honored by Le Jardin Academy
Sue Ferandin and her husband John have been active parents at Le Jardin Academy for a decade. Always leading by example, Sue is a tremendous force in moving the school forward as a lead volunteer with the newly formed Advancement Team. Proud parent to students in grades 7 and 2, Sue works tirelessly as a volunteer to ensure that LJA's advancement efforts mature to match the stellar education that her children receive.
Lesah Merritt honored by Foodbank of Hawaii
Lihue Safeway Store Manager, Lesah Merritt serves on the Hawaii Foodbank-Kauai Advisory Board. She is unmatched in motivating the community to support the hungry on Kauai. During Safeway’s Hunger Bag promotion, the Lihue store was #1 in bag sales in the entire Northern California region, selling 2,771 bags. She also launched the “Have a Rice Day” campaign. Customers answered by purchasing 447 20-pound bags of rice in two days!
Shelley Cramer honored by Sacred Hearts Academy
Shelley Cramer is an outstanding leader and philanthropist in our community. She serves as Chair for Development on Sacred Hearts Academy’s board of directors. Shelley developed the Academy’s mentorship program, Girls Got Grit, where students intern and receive mentoring at local companies in fields including law, medicine, non-profit management, media, development and finance. The program was developed in less than 4 months and Shelley raised $80,000 for the program and scholarships.
Lucille Mistysyn honored by Maryknoll School
Maryknoll School and Lucile Mistysyn are practically synonymous. Lucile graduated from Maryknoll School in 1937--it was just Maryknoll’s third graduating class - and while a lot has changed since then for both Maryknoll and Lucile, her devotion to her alma mater has remained constant. Through marriage, a family, and a career Lucile has always found time to attend Maryknoll events, volunteer her time and donate to projects dear to her heart as well as Maryknoll’s annual fund. At 97 years young, Lucile still volunteers her time every Tuesday morning in the Institutional Advancement Office. She is an active member of the Alumni Council representing the decade of the ‘30s and has served on a variety of school committees. She is an inspiration to the students of today. Thank you, Lucile, for all that you are for Maryknoll!
