CFRE Study Course
Session #6

Ethics, Accountability, & Professionalism

Greg Cole, CFRE
Executive Director
Emmaus House

In this session, we will review the AFP Ethics Assessment Inventory and the AFP Code of Ethical Standards and analyze some real-world ethical dilemmas.

Ethical standards and principles are the foundation for maintaining public trust, something that every nonprofit depends on for funding! To ensure that philanthropy merits the respect and trust of the public, AFP has adopted a comprehensive Code of Ethical Principles and Standards of Professional Practice.

The AFP Code provides members with a set of guidelines and standards based on accepted principles for professional fundraising practices. When placed in a questionable ethical situation by an organization, foundation or even a donor, AFP members can refer to the AFP Code to get direction and use the code to educate others on ethical practices.

In this session, participants will learn the basics of ethical practice by examining real-world examples so that they learn to think ethically and apply these principles in situations that they may not have faced in the past.
