PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Hello members of AFP Greater Los Angeles,
Happy new year 2020!
As development professionals, we all strive to stimulate a world of generosity and positive social good through fundraising best practices. AFP Global tells us: “You all do incredible work, bringing people together to change the world. Fundraising is the impact profession because that’s what we create: IMPACT. For the people we serve. For our communities. For our world.” As we enter this new year and decade, the 2020 board of directors, who stand on the shoulders of former leaders, strive to provide the education and experiences to enable YOU to be the most productive and satisfied fundraiser you can be.
Before communicating some exciting plans for the Chapter, I wanted to share an article from Global that highlights 2019 successes and how that impacts us. Scroll down the page to the list of accomplishments https://afpglobal.org/news/thank-you.
Here’s a glimpse of what is forthcoming locally…
- We will host the first Speed Mentoring Event on February 11, where professionals early (and later) in fundraising careers can benefit from brief discussions with seasoned mentors/coaches. We will also learn from Executive Service Corps the importance of mentoring & coaching in fundraising.
- We will again focus on Ethics in our profession throughout October, producing the 2nd Annual Ethics Breakfast, offered free to our membership.
- We will celebrate the National Philanthropy Day Conference and Awards Luncheon, at our 35th Anniversary event on November 13.
- And to help you calendar AFP events, we are providing this link to 2020 dates.
Your board will attend the Leadership Retreat at month’s end, where more detailed planning for 2020 will take place. We will review the AFP GLAC strategic plan, discuss educational opportunities and brainstorm value-added activities and programs for YOU.
In addition, be on the lookout for a special Membership Message email that will showcase the many perks of being a member. In mid-February, kindly complete the 2020 Member Survey, as we wish to learn about what matters to you and how we can support these ideas and activities.
I hope that you are as excited as I am for the year ahead! Thank you for allowing me to be of service to you and the Chapter in 2020.
Warm regards,
Mauria McPoland, MPA, ABC

Tuesday, February 11, 2020: Coaching and Mentoring for Nonprofit Success
Luncheon Keynote: David Factor, President and CEO of Executive Service Corps of Southern California: How to Use a Mentor or Coach to Prevent Job Burnout and to Promote Nonprofit Success
Join members and friends of AFP-GLAC for February’s all chapter luncheon and professional development session.
In the morning, enjoy Speed Mentoring with AFP GLAC (Professional Development Session) from 9:30 am – 11:45 am.
Have you ever desired ten minutes with a tenured development leader to talk about your career, job interests or challenges, or a possible mentor relationship? New entrants and those early in their development careers are invited to attend AFP-GLAC's first Speed Mentoring Program. Attendees will have the opportunity to meet with up to six experienced development professionals for twelve-minute sessions. It's a wonderful way to network, explore career or fundraising specific advice, and meet several leading development professionals in a short period. Areas of Interest to select from during the registration process next week include Annual Giving, Major Gifts, Prospect Research, to specific types of philanthropy (health care, faith-based, etc.).
Intermediate and more experienced development professionals are also invited to attend and participate in open round table discussions on board development, data analytics, career development, and major gifts. Mentees and other attendees are asked to sign up by Monday, February 3 and indicate the three areas of interest so that matches can be made for the highest value. Space is limited. Mentees should prepare questions to ask mentors. Please contact Connie Maguire, CFRE, event organizer, at cmaguire@netzelgrigsby.com for questions.
At the Luncheon, David Factor, President and CEO of Executive Service Corps of Southern California will explain the benefits of using coaches and mentors to prevent burnout while navigating the challenges of a fundraising career. Registration is now open: http://www.cvent.com/d/6hqymn
