President’s Message

Dear fellow members of AFP-GLAC,

I hope this newsletter finds you safe and well.

It continues to be a challenging time for us all, but I hope you and your organizations are beginning to see some “light at the end of the tunnel.”  I also hope that your membership in AFP-GLAC is proving to be a valuable resource as you seek support for those you serve. 

It is for that reason I’ve been giving some thought to what membership has meant to me over the years.  I realized there were times in my career when I could have used more support from my employer, my board and even my colleagues in the organizations I served.  I realized it was then that my fellow AFP-GLAC members provided me that help.  I found a sense of community here; a place to learn about best practices; support for my own professional advancement; a reliable source of information on industry trends; and a sounding board on ethical issues.  In short, I knew I could reach out to others who were facing the same challenges I was. 

Those opportunities for support didn’t stop here at our chapter, though.  There was a great deal to offer at AFP Global and there still is.  The free resources available include:

  • AFP Connect where you can interact with thousands of others fund raisers
  • Blackbaud University covering the basics of fund development and marketing
  • Micro videos and member exclusive webinars
  • Research that can help improve your fund raising results, and
  • Career advancement tools like Profile in AFP360° powered by Korn Ferry Advance

Of all the benefits, I’ve had through the years, the educational opportunities have been the most impactful.  I’ve particularly enjoyed hearing from the funders in our community, the women and men who represent the grant-making institutions we seek support from.  I’m especially pleased that we’ll hear from Miguel Santana, the new President and CEO of Weingart Foundation.  Miguel is a fierce advocate for equity and justice and has served Southern California in a number of roles through the years.  I hope you’ll join us on March 16th to hear about his new role and his plans for the future of Weingart. 

AFP-GLAC has also been a leader in the promotion of diversity and equity, and was among the first chapters to actively support it thanks to Randi Sunshine, who championed the cause over a decade ago.  That effort continues today under the leadership of Lisa Baxter and Danielle Lara, who are preparing for our chapter’s first IDEA Event of the year “Navigating the nonprofit sector as a racial, ethnic, & gender minority,” which will take place on March 23rd.  Please make plans to join us for this important conversation.

I also hope you’ll make plans to join us for our National Philanthropy Day celebration and Regional Philanthropy Conference. This event is being planned for this fall and is our premiere educational and celebratory program.  Its success not only depends on your participation as an attendee, but also on the help of our members who volunteer in many different ways.  Please consider lending a hand.  You’ll find the experience rewarding and a great way to further develop the sense of community that membership in AFP-GLAC can provide.  Please connect with Nicole Capossela at nicole.capossela@teamrubiconusa.org to learn more about how you can help.

Membership Spotlight: Yulanda Davis-Quarrie, MS, CFRE

Yulanda Davis-Quarrie currently works as Director of Institutional Advancement at Ramona Convent Secondary School, an all-girls Catholic preparatory high school founded in 1889 in Alhambra. She got her “accidental” start in fundraising at the Orthopaedic Hospital Foundation, and she’s been fundraising ever since. She has been involved with AFP and AFP-GLAC since the 1980’s, serving in multiple capacities and holding numerous roles within AFP Global and AFP-GLAC including chapter president for two years. She shared with us, “My AFP membership has proven to be invaluable in providing me continued educational resources to grow my craft as a skilled fundraiser,” and “I have gained great lifelong friendships and mentors.”

IDEA Updates

Your AFP-GLAC IDEA Committee

The Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Access (IDEA) Committee helps to set the tone and culture for AFP-GLAC and is responsible for creating and promoting safe spaces within the chapter for AFP-GLAC members, board leadership, program presenters, independent contractors and program content. It is comprised of board members and members who are committed to ensuring that the voices, perspectives and experiences of underrepresented groups are elevated, amplified and celebrated throughout the chapter and sector.

 

AFP-GLAC IDEA Program Awarded 2021 IDEA Champion Designation:

Congratulations to our own AFP-GLAC IDEA Committee and all members that have supported in our chapter’s IDEA programs and activities. IDEA is one of our chapter’s strategic priorities and our committee has been at the forefront in advancing it. The programs and activities offered to our chapter over the past year of been enriching, thought provoking, and challenging all of us to be solution oriented active leaders in promoting diversity and inclusion. AFP-GLAC is one of 98 chapters in the nation that was awarded this designation and honor.

Sponsored by the AFP Foundations for Philanthropy, this scholarship program provides members of diverse communities with a complimentary registration to attend AFP ICON 2021 in Minneapolis—or virtually!—June 28-30. Many of our chapter activities are hosted by wonderful volunteers. We invite you to be part of our amazing cadre of volunteers in 2021.

Opportunities Available

Membership Committee - VP, Melanie Elliott, MFA, melhelliott@gmail.com

In the membership committee you have the opportunity to send monthly emails to new members, renewing members, lapsed members, and members on the cusp of lapsing.

Make phone calls to welcome new members. Assist at the membership table during monthly meetings. Answer questions for new members or direct them to the correct resource or contact. Send emails to prospective members with information about joining AFP, and assist in writing Member Spotlights that will appear in our chapter newsletter.

Providing educational opportunities is one of the primary services that AFP provides to its members. Play an important role by helping to develop workshop and luncheon topics and securing speakers. We are seeking a wide variety of perspectives to ensure we are meeting the diverse needs of our membership.

 

Partners in Philanthropy (PIP) Committee – Chair, Lupita Garza, CFRE, garzagc@ah.org

The PIP Committee is responsible for raising funds through sponsorships from individuals or businesses interested in promoting their services through AFP advertising opportunities and events.

 

Ethics Committee – Chair, Barbara Bushnell, CFRE, barbarabushnell@att.net

The Ethics Committee is responsible for the planning and execution of the annual Ethics Breakfast, scheduled for October 5, 2021 at The Cathedral. The committee will determine the program, panel or speaker and work to publicize this free event to the chapter’s members. In addition, the committee will develop an on-going ethics education program that will be a part of regular chapter communications.

NPDCAL – Session Development/Planning

Help with the conference component of our event by developing educational tracks/sessions, as well as seek out potential speakers. Develop a post-event survey to collect feedback from attendees and provide feedback to participating speakers. Help secure speakers, sponsors and attendees throughout the year.

NPDCAL - Awards Luncheon/Program

Calling all event planners! National Philanthropy Day Awards Luncheon volunteers will help with the nomination and application process prior to our celebration lunch. Ensure materials are ready for printing and help with the planning of the logistics with the support of event producers. The day of the event, these committee members will help welcome honorees and guests to ensure they feel special welcome. Also, help secure speakers, sponsors and attendees throughout the year.

News from Global: Celebrating Women, Implementing Change

March is Women’s History Month and March 8th  is International Women’s Day.

As a member of the Global Women’s Impact Committee (WII), I wanted to share an article penned by Liz LeClair, CFRE, Chair of WII, entitled Celebrating Women, Implementing Changehttps://afpglobal.org/news/celebrating-women-implementing-change.

The initiative is AFP’s response to a series of issues around the role of women in fundraising, including gender inequity, sexual harassment, and implicit bias. The goal of the Initiative is to provide skills and training so that fair and equitable salaries can be negotiated; to provide resources to create workplaces that are against harassment in all its forms; and develop mentoring programs, as well as research and other services, that can break barriers and create new opportunities for women.

AFP Global Invites Your Help!

AFP Global will be hosting nationwide, Capital Hill Virtual Lobby Week, April 26-30, 2021. This will be a way for us to make our voices heard with our local members of Congress so that they understand the importance of key legislation such as the universal charitable deduction and the IRA Legacy Act that will increase charitable giving and help us do our jobs more efficiently.

Join me to help plan our chapter’s Capitol Hill Virtual Lobby week so that we can make sure we voice our concerns to our local congressmen and women. I need five to six volunteers that can help with this planning. All meetings will be held virtually and will not take too much time from your day job.

If you can’t help with planning, please send me your list of congressional leaders with contact information, so that we may reach out to them. We need to identify those we are interested in pursuing and start making contact immediately.
