This presentation will cover the basic steps fundraisers can take to become a major gifts officer. Participants will hear from a speaker who has successfully built major gift programs. Participants will take away real-world career path guidance on how to take the next step to become a major gifts officer. They will learn what development office leaders look for in hiring for a major gifts officer, successful habits to develop now, skills needed for the next level, winning behaviors to cultivate in themselves, and what to expect as a major gifts officer. The presentation will utilize the speaker’s experience in an interactive and engaging session designed to provide guidance and direct help to those in attendance. Multiple opportunities for discussion and conversation with participants are built into this session.

Michael J. Baker, CFRE, is a founder and partner of m3 Development, a full-service consulting firm for non-profits and foundations. Prior to m3 Development Michael worked with the American Cancer Society, National Hemophilia Foundation and Boy Scouts of America in executive level development and management positions. He has over 25 years of experience, received the AFP Partnership in Philanthropy 2010 Award for Consulting Excellence and in 2011 graduated from the AFP Faculty Training Academy as a Master Trainer.

Michael is considered one of the foremost experts in the field of non-profits and philanthropy. He has consulted on a variety of levels and is a frequent speaker, published writer and has produced multiple training videos. He serves as a Board of Director for the Association of Fundraising Professionals, Marlboro Educational Foundation, is Past President of the AFP – New Jersey Chapter, serves on the AFP US Government Relations Committee and on the AFP Finance Committee. Michael holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree from the State University of New York at Albany, achieved the Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) designation and is an Eagle Scout.
